Really though, training Jiu Jitsu isn’t easy.
Here are 3 reasons why you might suck at BJJ and what you can do to save yourself a little bit of embarrassment the next time you hit the mats.
REASON #1: Nothing Worth Doing is Done Easily
Straight up, Jiu Jitsu is not easy and you haven’t been doing it long enough to be good at it. Honestly, I could probably stop here. Even if you’re a really good athlete, this art/sport is extraordinarily difficult to be really, really good. Literal YEARS are spent learning concepts and techniques then, refining them. Without the right training environment and time under your belt, you could feel really inadequate compared to the other guys and gals in the room.
That’s the thing. Everyone else’s skill level is none of your damn business. If you focus on what you can control ( ie. how often you train, how long you drill/study, who you train with, etc) you’ll be able to accelerate your learning and skill on an incline.
REASON #2: You Are the Average of the 5 People You See The Most
If you’re training with people that are not good, you will also not be good. You may pick up a few basic skills and may even compete but, your skills will still fall back to the level of your training. You must train with quality people in order to have quality jiu jitsu. Period.
It’s not just whos you spend your time with. There have been many people that have been in world-class training rooms and still don’t learn a thing. You have to have a place and people that you’re comfortable with. The more comfortable you are the more receptive to the information you’ll be the easier it’ll be for you to learn.
REASON #3: Fatigue Makes Cowards of Us All
You need to get that ass in shape! When you are tired, everything is harder. If you’ve ever been around a tired two-year-old, you know EXACTLY what I’m talking about! They are the definition of the phrase, “I can’t even…”. The mental breakdown that happens when you’re out of wind will 100% kill your jiu jitsu vibe. Your technique will suck and you’ll get your ass handed to you.
This might be bigger than the number one reason. But, I think it ties into it more than anything. The more you train, the more you’ll push that heart rate and the better you’ll feel in the long run. If you’re still having trouble catching your breath, after you hit your asthma puffer, keep reading.
DON’T FORGET: You Can’t Out-train a Bad Diet
Some people are genetic freaks that can eat whatever they want and still look like they’re always ready for summer. You probably know one of these people and you probably secretly hate them too.
It’s cool. We all do.
You might be tempted to try those fad diets your friends are trying and really, they aren’t bad. But, a diet is a temporary thing. You want to have a healthy lifestyle, it starts with what you jam in your face.
