Are you the “Stinky Gi Guy?”
DON’T BE! Here are 2 ways to get the funk out of your gi.
If you’ve trained for any amount of time, you’ve made the mistake of leaving your gi in your bag or car after a monster training session. You know; one of those classes where you dit in the parking lot for 10 minutes after class because you’re not sure that you can grip the steering wheel tight enough to get you home safely.
You sure as hell don’t have the strength to take your bag in.
Anyway, the next morning, or two, you start to notice a funky smell and may start to wonder if something died in your back seat. That smell is bacteria and it loves to stay in your clothes.
*sidenote: down here in Texas, leaving your bag in your vehicle on a hot summer day can mean that you just throw the rashguard away because the smell just WON’T leave.
I’ve been training in Texas for 14 years so, I’ve got some research to work with on the number of loads of laundry I’ve done after training.
Keeping your gi clean and free of bacteria will GREATLY reduce the chance of getting a skin rash, staph infection or, some other nasty thing on your skin.
Mission#1: Don’t Smell Like Shit
My goto with EVERY laundry load of Gis that I wash is Lysol Laundry Sanitizer. It is AWESOME! Just add the recommended amount and run your laundry. I usually add just a little bit more if and when I soak them.
The reason I like this one so much is that I don’t have to run two cycles. One to soak and one to run with detergent. NO THANKS! It also doesn’t have an overwhelming scent and doesn’t make the gi material any rougher than it originally is.
Another Plus! You can use it with cold water so you can avoid the shrink that happens with hot water and it’s safe with all colours! It will not turn your white gi yellow!

You probably have these products at the house so, you don’t have to make a trip for something extra if you’re in a pinch to smell better.
Fabuloso, Pine-sol, Vinegar. In that order.
I always added too much of this and ended up smelling like Purple Fabuloso to the EXTREME. It’s not something I want to fill my nostrils when I’m fighting for my life against one of these savages in class. Same thing with vinegar. So BE CAREFUL on how much you add.
You might want to soak for 10-20 minutes. Let rinse and spin cycle complete before adding your prefered laundry detergent and running a normal cycle.
Vinegar was the most effective in removing a nasty smell but, it also dried my uniforms out like a prune and made the house smell like I was canning cucumbers.
Pine-sol was the happy medium. It made the cotton on the gis rough but, the scent wasn’t as stiff as Fabulouso. Both products ruined white gis as well.
Granted NONE of these are supposed to be laundry additives but, they did get the job done.
In closing, if you have a stinky teen or are a stinky adult you can use these to keep your gis disinfected, fresh and funk free. We want your Jiu Jitsu to be funky, not your gis.
Vagabond Martial Arts offers a fantastic way for men and women of Odessa/Midland, Texas and the Permian Basin to get into shape and hang out somewhere that doesn’t require a drink in your hand.
