Will My Child Want to Fight After Learning Martial Arts?
A Simple Answer to a Complicated Question on Kid’s Martial Arts Training.
This question is one of the most common questions we get from parents. They are SUPER concerned that training a martial art, like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), will foster the want for a fight outside of the academy. And rightfully so!
As a father of 3 young ladies and a boy, I don’t want ANY of them fighting or being a bully! I want my children safe and out of harm’s way. That is EXACTLY why they train BJJ.
Fighting is THE Product of Martial Arts Training.
There are no two ways about it. If you do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Vagabond BJJ, you will learn how to fight. Fighting is THE product of martial arts training.
There are a few fantastic and less talked about byproducts of kid’s martial arts training.
- Self-control under pressure
- Self-discipline
- Level Headedness
- Awareness
We call this “Verbal Jiu Jitsu”. What that means is that we teach children to first use their brain instead of their fists.
My father always put it to me this way, “Son, it takes a bigger man to walk away from a fight that it does to start one.”
When children train martial arts the understand the consequences of the fight. They have seen it first hand through sparring and techniques and wouldn’t wish those consequences on anyone unless they are forced.
I cannot tell you how many times my mouth wrote checks that my butt couldn’t cash before I started training Jiu Jitsu. Having that training earlier as a child definitely would have saved my skin on a number of occasions.
A True Martial Artist
Knowing how to tussle when you need to is a necessity to be a real martial artist. But, a true martial artist knows how to be kind, generous and, caring.
We want to raise kind, sweet children that are there to help and not harm. So wondering if your child is going to fight when he learns martial arts is a totally rational question.
That’s why we instill these principles in each of our curricula to ensure that we are helping give these kids an unfair head start in life. We teach the WHOLE child.
They are taught to be calm, cool and, collected under duress and these sever problems so that they can work THROUGH them and come out on top unbruised.
Will your child fight if they train martial arts? It is possible.
Will they be inclined to fight? That’s highly unlikely.
